WHAT TO WEAR WHEN THE DRESS CODE SAYS SMART CASUAL
Does navigating whether your jeans are too casual or your dress is too ‘dressy’ for an event sound familiar? You’re not alone. There is A LOT of confusion over the smart casual dress code but we’re here to help! Smart casual events call for polished but practical looks that nail just the right balance of relaxed and elegant. Follow these do’s and don’ts to master the art of smart casual dressing…
The Do’s
- Add a blazer! For a quick win, a sharp tailored blazer always adds a smart edge.
- Do choose smooth, luxe fabrics like silk slip skirts, tailored pants and polished leather.
- Do wear smart shoes. You don’t have to wear heels but stick to sandals, pumps or smart boots to elevate your look.
- If you want to wear jeans, opt for dark washes and clean cuts.
- If in doubt, keep it classic! Timeless wardrobe staples like white shirts and black tailored pants rarely look out of place.
- Do add a small and sleek designer bag. They have the power to elevate almost any look in milliseconds.

The Don’ts
- Don’t wear your favorite worn-in sneakers or flip flops.
- Don’t opt for ripped or distressed denim jeans. If you still want to feel on-trend, try leather pants.
- Avoid overly beachy fabrics like cotton shirts and light maxi dresses.
- Steer away from silhouettes and fabrics that seem on the sporty side. That means no varsity jackets, sweat pants or baggy hooded sweatshirts.
- Switch out oversized, shapeless t-shirts for elevated shoulder pad styles that feel sharper and more structured.
- Don’t leave shapeless dresses unbelted. Try adding a buckle belt to cinch in your silhouette and create a waist.
